Stewardship 2017:  Sharing God’s Grace Through Our Gratitude

“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”  II Corinthians 9 v. 11

We begin this season of stewardship on October 1st, which reminds us of the generosity of God as it flows through us and allows our gift of generosity to others.  In gratitude for the gifts that God has given to each of us, we, in turn, give to St. Paul’s the ability to spread God’s gifts to many.  Your contribution fosters the mission of St. Paul’s for the fellowship of our members, for the visitors who seek comfort in our presence, and for the community which benefits from our outreach.   Your contributions take many forms; an hour spent in making sandwiches for the Gathering, ironing clothing for the Thrift Shop, planting and tending our beautiful gardens, and yes, a contribution of the wealth which God has bestowed upon you.

IMG_04C8D3230C34-1Each of you will receive a letter from Father Brad with a pledge card for you to thoughtfully complete.  We are all asked to bring our completed pledge cards to church services on October 22nd, when we will celebrate Commitment Sunday, during which we will have a special opportunity to celebrate our gratitude with the pledging of our gifts for God’s purpose.  Our season of stewardship continues throughout the year, as we consider our expression of gratitude in the giving of our time and talent to the mission of St. Paul’s.  If you are unable to attend service that day, please mail the card to the church in the envelope provided.

Your contribution to the mission of St. Paul’s is a double opportunity for gratitude.  You give in thankfulness for the gifts that God has given to you.  Moreover, you provide the community of St Paul’s to spread the generosity of God to the larger community, causing gratitude in the hearts of the recipients.  Thank you!

A message from Father Brad on recent tragedies and invitation to prayer

Dear Friends;

As we once again find ourselves in vigil between death and new life, we stand in prayer and presence with the victims of yesterday’s tragic massacres in Las Vegas, Nevada and Lawrence, Kansas. We stand in death with those who died, in condolence with those who mourn and in anxiety with those victims of past tragedies for whom this event will re-open past grief and loss. It is almost unfathomable to contemplate how we can possibly be of assistance to them, yet in our Christian tradition we know that they need most the gift of our presence. Though we are far away, we may know victims who lived in these places or were visiting at this time. Any of us who have journeyed there may remember standing in that very spot and feeling a sense of gratitude that it could have been me but that it was not or a sense of guilt that I escaped such a random and all too familiar threat. I invite you to enter into that place and hold the ambiguity of your feelings. That is to be present with all those affected by this tragedy. So that you might find familiar and comforting surroundings for your prayer, St. Paul’s will be open for all who would like to come for prayer and solace. All visitors may enter the church from the West Portico during the day when staff is present.

I invite you to join St. Paul’s community in discerning new ways our ministries here in Milwaukee can guide us to build a culture of non-violence that might begin to heal the wounds and losses of our nation and the tragedies most certain to come in the future. On the eve of the feast of St. Francis, let us hold his prayer and hope:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled as to console;

To be understood as to understand;

To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

In hope and peace,

The Rev. Brad Toebben, Rector

St Paul’s Episcopal Church • 914 East Knapp Street • Milwaukee • Wisconsin

On Saturday, December 9th at 4:00pm, join hundreds of Milwaukeeans in one of Milwaukee’s premiere Christmas events to reflect upon the season in Scripture, music, and prayer in the magnificent beauty of St. Paul’s Church. A venerable Milwaukee tradition, the Festival of Lessons and Carols is in its 44rd season this year. The St. Paul’s Choir, led by Music Director Timothy Benson is joined by members of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus and superb guest organist Lee Erickson. The service is patterned after the Christmas Eve observance at King’s College in Cambridge, England, first held in 1918, and broadcast to millions world wide annually since 1928.

This service consists of holiday readings, carols and anthems by the likes of David Willcocks, Maurice Duruflé, John Tavener, Peter Hayward, John Scott, Morten Lauridsen, Francis Poulenc, John Gardner, Bob Chilcott, Alf Houkum, William Mathias, and others, and several traditional carols which those attending are invited to join in singing. Invite friends and neighbors to join us we usher in the Christmas Season in this most unique way—through the beauty of music in a transcendentally beautiful church as we celebrate the wonderful mystery of the Incarnation: God-become-Man! A reception with light snacks and beverages follows the service. All are welcome!

Join the Wisconsin Chamber Choir for a musical celebration of all the Americas—North and South—and all Americans. In recognition of Robert Gehrenbeck’s tenth anniversary as Artistic Director, the WCC presents the world premiere of Alleluia by New York composer and Juilliard faculty member Wayne Oquin. Inspired by Randall Thompson’s classic setting of the same one-word text, Oquin’s new version updates Thompson’s musical style in his own harmonic language, which has been compared to Morten Lauridsen’s. An extremely versatile musician, Oquin boasts recent commissions and performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony, the United States Air Force Band, the Houston Chamber Choir, and the King’s Singers.

The remainder of the program spans music of four centuries and multiple nationalities. Masterpieces of the US choral repertoire—Samuel Barber’s Reincarnations and Charles Ives’s Psalm 67—share billing with a diverse selection of works from throughout the hemisphere, including music by Mexican Baroque master Manuel de Sumaya; Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla; African-American composers Bobby McFerrin, Hall Johnson, W. C. Handy, and Rosephanye Powell; and Native-American composer and longtime friend of the WCC, Brent Michael Davids.

Founded in 1998, the Wisconsin Chamber Choir has established a reputation for excellence in the performance of oratorios by Bach, Mozart, and Brahms; a cappella works from various centuries; and world-premieres. The Wisconsin Chamber Choir’s Artistic Director, Robert Gehrenbeck, has been hailed by critics for his vibrant and emotionally compelling interpretations of a wide variety of choral masterworks.
The choir is an auditioned ensemble of volunteer singers, many with music degrees, devoted to the art of choral music.
